What are the differences between soy and paraffin wax?

Most of the world's soybeans are cultivated in the Midwestern United States, so buying soy candles supports American farmers!

Soy wax - is 100% natural and comes from the harvested soybean vegetable. Soybeans are the second most major agricultural crop farmed in the United States, after corn.

Once harvested, the soybeans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. Soybean oil is then extracted from the flakes; whatever is left, those dry flakes get used for various animal feeds.

Paraffin wax - considered the most commonly used wax candle - is made using a contrasting method, and because of this, the cost is much lower.

Paraffin wax is the by-product of the petroleum oil, coal, or oil shale purification processes. You're left with paraffin wax when you remove the waxy substance from this crude oil. When you think about turning that into a table candle, that you will breathe in; it's pretty disgusting.

Soy wax candles are a renewable resource as they are biodegradable, non-toxic, and, more importantly, non-carcinogenic. Soybeans are cultivated without herbicides or pesticides, making them safe and eco-friendly. Soy wax candles are finally vegan-friendly and do not contain any animal products or by-products.

Paraffin candles/wax are derived from petroleum, think, car oil. Studies show petroleum-derived candles produce a notable amount of "petro-soot" compared to other kinds of wax, such as soy, meaning paraffin emits considerably more black soot particles into the air when burned due to its petroleum-based origins.

As a deep cleaning company, we see soot wreak havoc on EVERYTHING.

Soot notoriously gets onto windows, glass, ceilings, shelves, and the inside of drawers; we clean and wipe off black film everywhere. How do you suppose your lungs look if you are always burning paraffin?

Paraffin wax can produce specific emissions that can compromise the air quality in your home. These emissions may include alkanes, alkenes, and toluene, all of which have been reported to have harmful effects on those who breathe these pollutants.

Contrary to popular belief, soy wax candles can also emit soot into the air; however, the amount is SO minimal that it won't coat anything with black soot like paraffin is blameworthy for.

Because quality matters as there can still be contaminants in many of the soy candles you buy, burn, and breathe we seek out premium soy/coconut that emits almost NO SOOT.

Did you know that over 90% of soybean crops in the United States are genetically modified (GMO) and are grown using herbicides or pesticides!

Bottom line: We do not use these inert growers who cultivate and sell non-filtered GMO soybeans for our candles like many soy wax designers are guilty of. Instead, we seek out some of the finest premium soy wax we can get our hands on in order to pass along that quality to you!

That means we buy soy wax directly from manufacturers who cultivate pesticide-free soybeans on actual American farms that care about quality over profits. You can rest assured these farms across American soil are not Bill Gates-owned farmland or from one of the 90% still using herbicides and pesticides!

Some soy wax manufacturers process their soybean oil to filter out any genetically modified material or "potentially present herbicides or pesticides," so you must still be careful when selecting actual NON-GMO soybean wax. Not all soy wax manufacturers process these harmful elements, though, which means that a good portion of soy wax candles on the market still have the potential to emit toxic chemicals into the air you breathe.
